The fourth grade teachers are already planning for next year. They can’t wait to meet their new classes. Summer is a great time to relax, but also get a head start for the next year. In order to help you to prepare your child for the transition, we have compiled a list of skills and activities. Reading:
Read at minimum 30 minutes each day to yourself or someone.
Keep a reading log of all of the books you read. Write a reflection about each. (See attached reflection menu and log)
Participate in the summer reading program at your local library or Barnes and Noble. Children earn cool prizes for reading.
Read 26 books. Start with a book by an author whose last name begins with an A and work your way through the alphabet.
Go to the library and check-out a biography about a famous person. After reading the book, list five facts about this person’s life.
Spelling
Make a collage using words that contain prefixes and/or suffixes. (These words may be cut out from a newspaper or magazine.) Locate the base or root word.
Math:
Practice measuring by letting your child help use a recipe to make a food item.
Practice the concept of weight by pointing out containers at the grocery store and how much each weighs. See if your child can come up with other examples for each weight.
Find the perimeter and area of a room inside your house.
Your child will need to know addition/subtraction facts and multiplication facts (quickly without thinking or using fingers). There will be a multiplication tests beginning the first week of school. Make Multiplication Flash Cards- study 30 minutes per week.
Make a schedule for the day and write down the times you do certain activities. (use the digital and analog clock)
Websites- below is a list of several websites that are great for practicing grade level skills.
Keep an observation log on things you see around you. Include as many descriptions as you can. Be sure to use all 5 senses.
Go on a nature hike.
Make a leaf notebook. See how many leaves you can identify.
Plant something outside and keep a record of its measurements as it grows.
Social Studies:
Draw a map of your neighborhood. Place a small surprise somewhere and put a mark on it on your map. See if a friend or relative can follow your map and find the surprise.
Use a map to locate places your family has been to or wants to go.
Find a place to volunteer a few days a week in your community- library, animal shelter, community center, church, etc.
Visit 3 tourists’ spots in Raleigh.
Visit a local museum- NC History Museum, NC Science Museum of Natural Sciences, CAM, Asheboro Zoo, Poe Health Center, etc.
